What should we bring? This question accompanies nearly every conversation I have about an upcoming engagement session. So, I thought I’d take the time to share with you a few tips on how to prepare for your engagement session.
The biggest thing I want you to remember from your engagement session is that you had fun! It’s a great time to get to know us as your photographers, to see how we work and for us to see who you are as a couple. We LOVE engagement sessions and getting to know our couples before the wedding day is the best thing we could do. So our goal is to give you fabulous photos and experience.
Here are some practical things you can do to prepare:
CLOTHING
You want it to match who you are. If you’re a jeans and blouse kind of girl, make sure you bring at least one outfit that’s jeans and a blouse! On the other hand this is a great time to dress up as a couple and look your best. You want to complement each other, but personally I would avoid perfectly matching outfits (ie. jeans & white t- shirts). I encourage all of my couples to bring at least 2 different outfits and often times they come with choices. If you’re unsure then bring all your considered options and I can help you coordinate your outfits.
STYLING
For the ladies, I want you to feel confident in front of the camera. For me, whenever I take the time to dress up, curl my hair, get my makeup done is the time I feel like taking a photo. What this means for you is that this is the time to dress up like you haven’t seen your fiancé in a year and are about to see him for the first time at the airport. What I recommend is asking a really good team of friends to help you get ready that day. Don’t stress yourself out and rely on your finance. Get some girls to help you do your makeup and hair and go shopping! Another option is to use this time to have your practice run regarding hair and makeup for the wedding. If you’d like recommendations, I’d be happy to pass a few a long who’ll take amazing care of you!
PROPS
This is where you get to be creative. In the past we use to just met our couples at any park and just simply photographed them. With time and experience we learned how to create more fun unique experience to help our couples feel more relax in front of the camera. We found that if we asked the couple to come up with one creative prop, this prop would become that unique piece that would allow the couple to have fun and get creative with it front of the camera. Don’t worry; this item doesn’t have to be anything crazy. A pet, balloons, a chalkboard with your wedding date, a frame with your parents wedding photo, kites, bubbles, apples, cotton candy, picnic, books, rollerskates and so many more options are all the little things that can make your engagement photos unique. Don’t hesitate to bring anything that truly reflects you individually or as a couple.
